First off, you've probably been hearing a lot about the low oxygen conditions in Hood Canal from the newspaper and other media. Here is an example. But you may not realize that a very historic event happened during 2003. The closure of certain fisheries in Hood Canal by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife was the first time in Washington State's history that a fishery was closed due to a water quality issue such as low dissolved oxygen. There have been many closures for other reasons, but this was the first due to poor oxygenation.
