Sightings of fish kills on Hood Canal, October 8, 9, 10, 2003 From a resident who lives 1 mi north of Hoodsport , on October 8: Beginning about 8 pm on Tuesday dead shrimp began floating onto the beach. Throughout the night more dead animals floated ashore. On this section of beach of 150 feet, "hundreds" of dead shrimp had washed ashore- other dead shrimp were visible up and down the beach. Some were reported as spot shrimp. Dead fish were also reported- flounder, sculpin, perch, "eels" and rockfish. Some of the dead fish were reported as "large" in size.i.e. large enough to keep and eat. From the Skokomish tribe, October 8 Reporting a substantial kill today in Annas Bay, south of Hoodsport. Numerous dead crab and fish. Live fish reported to be milling in the shallows. Tribal officials have observed this kill and will follow up with photos -and D.O measurements if possible. Crews working in the vicinity of Twanoh State Park report nothing unusual has been observed there today. From Rick Mraz, a Shoreline Planner with Mason County. Upon receiving your e-mail I grabbed a car today (10/9/03) and drove up to Potlatch, then stopped at Glen Aire, and the went to Sund Rock. Literally hundreds and hundreds of shrimp, hundred of blennies and gunnels (eels), dozens of striped perch, rockfish, rock sole, starry flounder (many of harvest legal size, juvenile octopus, etc. It's really bad. From Wayne Palsson of DFW, after completing his first dive at Sund Rock, Friday morning. Observed 50 dead copper rockfish, dead wolf eels, dead lingcod, 10 other species of groundfish, dead crab, spot prawn and octopus. It is not clear to me how long these animals have been dead. From a report written by WDFW staff following an inspection of the western shore of the Canal on Thursday afternoon GB Here is a quick inventory of fish species found dead at the Glen-Ayre Motel beach, Potlatch, and Sund Rock. We also looked at Lilliwaup and Triton Cove S.P., but no dead fish were seen at Triton Cove S.P. and only one great sculpin and a gunnel were seen at Lilliwaup. At Glen-Ayre: Several hundred (crescent and saddleback?) gunnels. Maybe pin-point gunnels too. Many rock sole, one or two starry flounder, and quite a few Pacific sand dabs. A buffalo, a northern sculpin and a couple of great sculpins. One copper rockfish and one octopus. There were more dead fish off shore including many flatfish and gunnels. At Potlatch: Quite a few Rock sole, one or two English sole, a few gunnels, one or two shiner perch and a staghorn sculpin. Sund Rock: A few striped perch, shiner perch, sculpins and a few small flatfish. This photos was taken by a Hoodsport resident Richard Bambans on Wed (10-8-03) morning
