Citizens Monitoring Program-
volunteers sampling

The Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group (HCSEG), as part of the Hood Canal Dissolved Oxygen Program, developed the Citizen’s Monitoring Program (CMP) while the funding for the HCDOP was initially being established. The monitoring program continues to be guided by HCDOP scientists and is being implemented by the HCSEG and Skokomish Tribe.

The CMP has continued to capture weekly marine water data since August of 2003 at established sampling transects. In the summer of 2003, the staff of the HCSEG had the opportunity to spend time on a University of Washington R/V Thomas G. Thompson cruise. The goal of this UW-PRISM voyage was to train staff in the collection of water samples for dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, and nutrients using the same established techniques that the UW and Ecology have used in their more long-term marine monitoring programs.

There was a ‘technology transfer’ to the Skokomish Tribe in June of 2004, that was the result of resources sharing, training and collaboration. The Skokomish Department of Natural Resources, a partner in the HCDOP, now shares in the weekly sampling and data collection.

This sampling effort, and resultant trend data, has provided a tremendous increase in the understanding of the marine water dynamics. The weekly transect data obtained through the CMP is being used by the HCDOP-IAM study to help verify marine biogeochemical models.

The HCSEG and Skokomish Tribe plan to continue the CMP which supports the collective research to help find answers to the questions regarding the complexities of the DO issue. If you are interested in getting involved or just want to learn more, please contact the HCSEG office.
